Tien Giang successfully organized “Conference on connecting overseas Vietnamese - Together for building the homeland, international integration and development”
On December 23rd and 24th, 2019 in collaboration with the Committee of Overseas Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City, People's Committee of Tien Giang Province successfully organized the Conference on Connecting overseas Vietnamese - Together for building the homeland, international integration and development.
Attending the conference, from Tien Giang authorities, there were Mr. Tran Van Dung - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Mr. Luu Van Phi, Director of the Provincial Department of Foreign Affairs; Mr. Tran Thanh Duc - Chairman of the Provincial Business Association and leaders of the provincial government agencies and People's Committees of districts, city and towns, businesses and new agencies in the province.
From the Committee of Overseas Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City, there were Mr. Phung Cong Dung, the Chairman and Mr. Tran Duc Hien, the Deputy Chairman and 60 intellectuals, businessmen who are living and working in many countries and territories around the world such as Korea, Germany, USA, Japan, Taiwan, Israel, France, Canada, Australia, England, Italy, Denmark, Thailand, Singapore.
Within the conference program, on the afternoon of December 23rd, 2019, the overseas Vietnamese delegation were guided to visit the locations of projects calling for investment such as Gia Thuan I Industrial Cluster (50 hectares), Go Cong Industrial Park (285 hectares); MeKong Software Park; High-tech plant, vegetable and flower seedling production project in Tam Hiep commune, Chau Thanh district (34 hectares); Tan Phuoc Resort and Golf Course Project; Fruit growing area for processing industry in Tan Phuoc district.
At those locations, the delegation were briefly introduced on the projects in which Tien Giang province is calling for investment from domestic and foreign enterprises, especially overseas Vietnamese enterprises.
On this occasion, Vietnam - Korea Association of Entrepreneurs & Investment (VKBIA) gave 50 million VND to Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh's family (Tan Thanh Hamlet, Thanh Nhut Commune, Go Cong Tay District) to build a semi-permanent house on an area of more than 70m2.
Speaking at the opening session of the conference, Mr. Tran Van Dung - Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee appreciated the positive contribution of overseas Vietnamese to the socio-economic development and international integration of the country in general and Tien Giang in particular in many different fields from politics to economic sector, science - technology, health, education, training of human resources, culture, sports, social security, environmental conservation, etc. in recent years.
The Vice Chairman respectfully recommended that overseas Vietnamese continue to actively support the province to successfully implement the socio-economic development goals of 2020 and the subsequent years, and contribute to building Tien Giang province into a richer and more beautiful place. In terms of the overseas Vietnamese -related work in recent years, according to the statistics from the Department of Foreign Affairs, some positive results have been achieved as follows:
In 2015, Tien Giang was the first province in the country to successfully build a basic database of overseas Vietnamese who come from Tien Giang and are now living in different countries in the world. Accordingly, about 18,019 overseas Vietnamese used to live and work in the province for 6 months or longer. In addition, in order to timely inform them of the policies of the Party and the State, as well as connecting them with their homeland, the province has established 03 Overseas Vietnamese Relatives Associations in My Tho City, Go Cong Tay District and Go Cong Dong District.
- In terms of remittances, according to the statistics of the Branch of State Bank in Tien Giang, in 2019, overseas Vietnamese's remittances sent to their relatives in the province was US$ 79.5 million. Tien Giang was one of the localities in the Mekong Delta receiving a relatively large remittance.
- In terms of investment of overseas Vietnamese enterprises, up to now, there are 17 enterprises with a total registered capital of 123.64 billion dongs in processing agricultural and aquatic products for export, hotel and tourist services, apparel manufacture, construction, manufacturing handicrafts, etc. To acknowledge the contribution of overseas Vietnamese to the provincial socio-economic development, every year Certificates of the merit of the provincial People's Committee are awarded to overseas Vietnamese individuals and groups with many contributions to the province.
Speaking at the conference, Mr. Phung Cong Dung - Chairman of the Committee of Overseas Vietnamese in Ho Chi Minh City informed the attendees about the committee role of connecting and promoting overseas Vietnamese resources and creating cohesion and cooperation between overseas Vietnamese and southern provinces and cities. He hoped that the Conference would create a positive message so that intellectuals, experts and overseas businessmen can contribute to the provincal development as well as looking for investment opportunities in Tien Giang.
Also in the conference program, Tien Giang Business Association and VKBIA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to enhance information sharing between the two associations to support and promote the cooperation between businessmen and member enterprises of the two sides, expand investment opportunities and market development in Korea; Provide connection opportunities for the development of both parties and Promote the strength of the Vietnamese entrepreneurs and businesses network in Korea to enhance cooperation and partnership, seek domestic and foreign business investment opportunities, and support integration and development strategies of domestic businesses.
This is the first time Tien Giang organized the conference, which is considered an opportunity for overseas Vietnamese to connect with the province, look for business and investment opportunities there, and support Tien Giang in its development and international integration to create pratical, long-term results. The conference was also an opportunity for Tien Giang to share and exchange experience in connecting and attracting overseas Vietnamese resources to contribute to the provincial construction and development; as well as introducing the provincial potentials, advantages and investment environment in order to attract and call for overseas Vietnamese's investment and to connect overseas Vietnamese enterprises with the local enterprises. It also created favorable conditions for businesses to meet, exchange their experience and establish investment cooperation in the coming time.
At the Conference, overseas Vietnamese experts, intellectuals and businessmen had many practical and sincere suggestions and proposed specific solutions such as the application of high-tech agricultural production adapting to climate change, how to introduce the local specialty fruits in foreign countries, ecotourism development combined with constructing a marina to serve Viet Nam's middle and upper-middle class in the coming years, training the provincial high-quality human resources in developed countries, how to access Korean investment funds for provincial technical infrastructure projects, English training, etc.
The Conference really attracted attention from the media. There were over 10 newspapers reporting it. It will also certainly help to make the provincial policies for overseas Vietnamese better formulated. Furthermore, it also had positive effects on calling for the contribution of overseas Vietnamese in different countries to the development of Tien Giang in the coming time./.
